Established in 1797, construction of the Lee Farm Estate began in 1810 by an immigrant loyalist from Connecticut, Mr. Jedediah Lee. This colonial and Georgian architectural beauty has been inhabited by the Lee and Ball family for more than 165 years. Moreover, several personalities of this pioneer house of the Eastern Townships, will have marked the history of Stanstead and of Canada. Among others, Lady Henrietta Banting (née Ball), who was the wife of the co-inventor of insulin Sir Frédérick Banting (Nobel Prize 1923).



Born in Rock Island, this great lady, who became a doctor, was a prominent figure for the medical world. His multiple implications both within the community and on an international scale have earned him the greatest respect. Anxious to eventually return to her native region, in 1951 Lady Banting purchased the estate from her uncle Erratus Ball and undertook major renovations to the farm. This work, which took place over a period of more than 7 years, brought a certain charm and a remarkable distinction worthy of Lady H. Banting.



The Ball family has been directly involved in the development of the railroad, the granite industry, Stanstead customs as well as the 2nd largest bank in Canada which is located in the heart of the town of Stanstead.
